In September 1946 Helen Rogers received a letter from the federal War Department with new details about the death two years earlier of her husband, an Army bomber pilot.
The letter explained that Norman Rogers Jr., a graduate of Aquinas Institute of Rochester High School, and his crew were shot down over Germany, taken hostage by enemy soldiers, set upon by the frenzied residents of a town and beaten to death.
