During archaeological excavations in Venlo last week the remains of a German soldier from World War II were found.
That was made public by the municipality of Venlo this Wednesday.
The soldier of the airborne regiment (Fallschirmjäger) of the German Luftwaffe is probably slain in the autumn of 1944 by an Allied bombing raid. As the body was found next to a large bomb crater in Venlo, Blerick district. Possibly the soldier was buried under the rubble caused by the explosions.
Employees of the Salvage and Identification Service of the Royal Netherlands Army (BIDKL) have investigated the war grave and the remains were recovered. The “Erkennungsmarke” (dog tag) of the soldier is in poor condition and may not be deciphered.
