Whenever one of his men was killed in action, it was Larry Lantow’s job to write to their families. But unlike many things done over and over, he said, it never got easier.
“I hated it,” added Lantow, who commanded a tank company during World War II.
The family “always wanted to know how he died. You might not want to tell them — he might’ve had his head blown off. (He) might’ve burned up in a tank.”
