Still looking for an original idea for a dessert these holidays? Well, why don’t you try to bake an authentic World War I trench cake? The recipe for this tradional cake has been released by the Government. 

INGREDIENTS:

  • 225g/8oz. plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa
  • 110g/4oz. margarine
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/4 pint of milk
  • 75g/3oz. brown sugar
  • 75g/3oz. cleaned currants
  • Nutmeg
  • Grated lemon rind
  • Ginger

METHOD:

  • Grease a cake tin.
  • Rub margarine into the flour in a basin.
  • Add the dry ingredients.
  • Mix well.
  • Add the soda dissolved in vinegar and milk.
  • Beat well.
  • Turn into the tin.
  • Bake in a moderate oven for about two hours.
