USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage is an upcoming war movie which is directed by Mario Van Peebles and written by Cam Cannon and Richard Rionda Del Castro. Star actor is Nicolas Cage who will play Captain Charles Butler McVay, other starring actors are Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter, Brian Presley and Cody Walker. The movie is set for release on May 30, 2016 during Memorial Day.
“This film is about the crewmen of the USS Indianapolis, their unsurpassed bravery, dedication to each other and distinguished service to our country,” Mario van Peebles said. “It’s an honor to tell their story.”
However one of our readers contacted us with following statement: “Hannibal has gone to great lengths to portray they have the backing and support of the USS Indianapolis Survivors when in fact they have done the absolute minimum possible, practically avoiding all contact with the existing USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization. There has been no sharing or consulting with the one active and recognized organization of living survivors.” Adding, “Hannibal has not been forthcoming or diligent with fact-checking or consulting with key living persons or families available. In fact, the Survivors’ Organization had to notify Hannibal to stop using their name in promoting the movie because Hannibal refused to allow the organization to see any version of the script. That is their perogative as long as they are not claiming support by the organization. There is a photo of one Survivor talking to Nic Cage that they use to insinuate Survivor support. To my knowledge, he was there to see some of the filming and not representing anybody other than himself, and bless him, was happy to see a real movie being made about his ship and shipmates.”
Also did you know that an original PBY Catalina being used for USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage was destroyed when the seaplane began to take on water due to a mechanical problem. It was pulled closer to the shore, where it remained, slightly nose-down with landing gear stuck in the sand. Salvage crews attempted to load it on a barge unfortunately, the PBY broke into three pieces in the process, resulting in what is most likely a total loss.
