Germany’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense is set to take a new form with the impending delivery of long-range weapons made in Ukraine and financed by Berlin. These advanced systems, which could enter service within weeks, are part of a growing partnership between the two nations to strengthen Ukraine’s military capacity amid the ongoing conflict.
A Strategic Agreement Between Germany and Ukraine
The deal, confirmed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, marks a significant step in the deepening military collaboration between Germany and Ukraine. Speaking ahead of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting in Brussels, Pistorius stated that the production of these long-range weapons, financed by Germany, would allow Ukraine to expand its defense capabilities rapidly. The weapons, which are being manufactured within Ukraine, will be deployed to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in a matter of weeks.
The agreement builds on the understanding reached between Pistorius and his Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov, who visited Berlin the previous week. It reflects Germany’s broader commitment to direct investment in Ukraine’s defense industry. Pistorius described the situation as one where “everything on the ground moves faster,” underscoring the production capacity already in place.
Rapid Production and Deployment
The new weapons, which are part of a broader effort to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses, will play a pivotal role in the ongoing war. Pistorius highlighted that a substantial number of long-range weapons are expected to be manufactured this year. “The first systems could be operational in the Ukrainian Armed Forces within weeks,” he added. This rapid pace of production, he explained, is vital for maintaining Ukraine’s defense against ongoing threats.
The deal, valued at €2.2 billion (about $2.38 billion), also involves Diehl Defense, the German company known for producing IRIS-T air defense systems. Diehl’s involvement ensures that the weapons will be high-quality and well-suited for the complex challenges on the battlefield. The production capacity in Ukraine is crucial to Germany’s strategy of bolstering Ukrainian defenses while supporting the country’s industrial base.
The support also extends beyond weapon production. Both Kyiv and Berlin have agreed to continue supplying air defense systems, ammunition, and financial support for repairs. This growing cooperation highlights the critical role of international partnerships in Ukraine’s defense strategy.
