President Donald Trump has warned that a U.S. military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities remains a real possibility if Tehran refuses to renegotiate a nuclear agreement. His comments, made during a campaign appearance and shared on Truth Social, reflect rising tensions between the two countries as the region braces for potential escalation.

Renewed Threats Amid Military Deployments

Trump’s recent remarks were triggered by a statement from Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who said that any U.S. military attack would spark a broader regional war. In response, Trump said,  “We don’t make a deal, then we’ll find out whether or not he was right.” He emphasized the presence of the “biggest, most powerful ships in the world” in the region, referring to the recent deployment of a U.S. carrier strike group and additional air defense systems to the Middle East.

This build-up of American forces coincides with growing instability inside Iran, where widespread protests have resulted in thousands of deaths, according to human rights organizations. The unrest, fueled by economic grievances and political repression, has placed significant pressure on the Iranian regime. Trump, capitalizing on this internal turmoil, has openly called for “new leadership in Iran” and publicly voiced support for the protest movement, stating, “Help is on its way.”

In a separate statement, Trump mentioned the deployment of a “massive armada” to the Gulf region. He compared the current force to the one sent to Venezuela in 2020 as part of an attempt to detain President Nicolás Maduro. Describing the force as “ready, willing, and able.” The U.S. President warned that, if negotiations fail, “the next attack will be far worse.”

Iran Warns of Consequences and Targets

In direct response to Trump’s rhetoric, Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Khamenei, issued a stern warning through the state-run IRNA news agency. He stated that “any military action by the United States, from any location and at any level, will be considered the start of a war.” Shamkhani added that Iran’s response would be immediate and widespread, threatening targets including Tel Aviv and “all those who support the aggressor.”

These warnings reflect a broader shift in Iran’s defense posture as the country attempts to deter further U.S. military actions. Iranian officials have framed the current standoff not just as a bilateral issue but as a flashpoint with regional consequences. The involvement of Israel as a potential target highlights the risk of conflict spreading beyond U.S.-Iranian boundaries.

The sharp exchange of threats arrives amid stalled diplomatic efforts. While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has not ruled out renewed talks, he confirmed last week that there are no current plans for direct negotiations with Washington.
