The Swiss actor Bruno Ganz has passed away at the age of 77 from cancer. This was announced today by his management. Ganz was best known for his excellent portrayal of Adolf Hitler in “Der Untergang” also known as “Downfall” (2004) and as Damiel in “Der Himmel über Berlin” (1987).
Bruno Ganz was born on 22 March 1941 in Zürich, Switzerland. He was diagnosed with intestinal cancer last year and he immediately began chemotherapy. However, he died friday night, 15 February 2019 in Zürich.
For his performance as Hitler in Der Untergang, Ganz did four months of research on Hitler in preparation for the role. His performance, which was widely critically acclaimed, became the basis for a series of “Hitler Rant” parody videos on YouTube (see the original scene below).
Ganz was the holder of the Iffland-Ring, which is passed from actor to actor as being judged the “most significant and most worthy actor of the German-speaking theatre”, according to Wikipedia.
