Still looking for an original idea for a dessert these holidays? Well, why don’t you try to bake an authentic World War I trench cake? The recipe for this tradional cake has been released by the Government.
INGREDIENTS:
- 225g/8oz. plain flour
- 2 teaspoons cocoa
- 110g/4oz. margarine
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 1/4 pint of milk
- 75g/3oz. brown sugar
- 75g/3oz. cleaned currants
- Nutmeg
- Grated lemon rind
- Ginger
METHOD:
- Grease a cake tin.
- Rub margarine into the flour in a basin.
- Add the dry ingredients.
- Mix well.
- Add the soda dissolved in vinegar and milk.
- Beat well.
- Turn into the tin.
- Bake in a moderate oven for about two hours.
