USS New Jersey (BB-62; also known as “Big J”), an Iowa-class battleship, was the most decorated U.S. Battleship in Naval history and the second ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the US state of New Jersey (the first being BB16). She was launched on 7 December 1942 by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, commissioned at Philadelphia on May 23, 1943 and decommissioned on February 8, 1991 in Long Beach, California. In her active career she participated in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War and in the Gulf War. In 2001, she began her career as a Museum.
