In “SOUTHERN BRIGADIER GENERALS IN REVOLUTIONARY WAR”, Douglas Branson, author of more than 20 books, presents 18 fascinating bios, short but jam-packed with enthralling
forgotten or long-lost information, not only about the most important top commanders, but
also about the Revolutionary War itself. Douglas makes the case that George Washington and
his brigadier generals, especially those from the South, won that war despite being cowards,
insubordinates, alcoholics, womanizers, ineffective leaders, and “losers” all around. Seven died
of combat wounds and 10 were British captives.

Meanwhile, McFarland offers a huge Civil War history in “THE CAVALRY OF THE ARMY OF
THE OHIO” by Dennis Belcher, already known for authoring nine titles on the Civil War.
Throughout that bloodbath, the cavalry of the OHIO – – MICHIGAN, OHIO, INDIANA, ILLINOIS,
PENNSYIVANIA, KENTUCKY, AND TENNESSEE – – was a developing force beginning a highly
dangerous journey of virtually endless battles that would make it the best cavalry in the world.
In late 1862, most of this cavalry was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland and a second
force emerged in the second Army of the Ohio. No question this book is their complete history,
bar none. A must for every Civil War library, personal or public.
Moving into the 20 th century, 1941 – 1945, McFarland republishes its popular, highly praised
2022 classic, “A DOCTOR’S WAR – – Letters and Reflections from the Frontlines of World War II”.
Praise for it came in early from every quarter. Wrote Rick Atkinson, bestselling author and
Pulitzer Prize winner for “The Liberation Trilogy”, “Intimate and compelling. Captures the vivid,
often poignant experience of a frontline physician during the brutal campaigns in North Africa
and Italy.”
This is the story of Lt. Col./Maj. Arthur L. Ludwick, Jr., who was responsible for the well-
being of traumatized and wounded American soldiers through some of the bloodiest
engagements in North Africa and Italy, primary, ANZIO, CASSINO, MONTE PANTNO, HILL 609,
the FONDOUK PASSES, etc. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and Silver Star, a rare
combination for commendation for an unarmed medical officer. Chapter 9, endearingly written
by daughter Peggy Ludwick, especially her subchapter, “Dad’s Last Battle”, is beyond priceless.
