Being there . . . . in the midst of evil personification, when HITLER’S story was all of Germany’s
story’s, and, by 1929, when HEINRICH HIMMLER, an early Nazi, was ordered to command the
Fuhrer’s personal bodyguard, the Schutzstaffel (the SS), or “Protection Squad, which had grown
to 50,000 men. To further weaponize the Nazi Party, Himmler ushered in an equal in
systematic, indifferent killing, individually or in mass, career Naval officer, REINHARD HEYDRICH
(1904 – 1942), who was an ideal model of Aryan manhood, callous, blond, blue-eyed, a
musician and linguist (whatever that was in the German National Socialist Party). Himmler
believed him to be a perfect specimen for assassination duty of those opposed to the Fuhrer.
But even HITLER, and his closest associates, feared Heydrich. Reputation of his coldblooded
ruthlessness spread, taking the attention off Himmler. But the pivot of such minds of horror
was Reichsfuhrer – SS Heinrich Himmler (1900 – 1945), who, by 1936, was chief of all
Germany’s police, including the newly formed Gestapo. Himmler, a monster within his frail self,
was responsible for the death camps. As Heydrich’s superior, he knew the so-called “Aryan
Ideal” coveted his job, hence watched his every move, especially since in 1943 he rose even
higher by being promoted Minister of the Interior, a special gift from Hitler because the Fuhrer
knew from the beginning Himmler would never betray him (Of course, Himmler did when he
attempted, without Hitler knowing it, to open peace talks with the Allies in April of 1945). Since
he personally ruled the Waffen (armed) SS, no one dared challenge his authority and power,
especially Heydrich, “a mere technician for ordered death”. Everyone in Europe, including the
Allied High Command, understood it was Himmler who controlled the various death machines
of Nazi Germany.

Chapter X, Perpetrators and Victims, is, unequivocally, the best summary ever written on the
subject.
Why read these books now, the Christmas Season only a skip, hop, and jump months away?
Lest we Americans deny or forget such a man as this, and his cohorts like Heydrich and Hitler,
and countless other willing participants, most even eager to live killing systematically, less than
80 years ago. After critiquing the Shakespearean quotation, “No beast so fierce knows but
some touch of pity; I know none, therefore am no beast.” Ponder it. Us humans are capable of
being worse than the worst beasts. We can relish organized murder without feeling. Why not
give your child, or children, a tight hug of extra seconds, unafraid of showing the tears in your
eyes.
As for The Master of Murder, Reichsfuhrer – SS Heinrich Himmler, his life ended when trying
to pass a British checkpoint on May 21 of 1945. The fugitive, with forged papers and a false
identity, was nonetheless recognized and arrested. Have nothing to do with his lies, the British
officer started walking around his desk to handcuff him as a VIP Nazi escapee. Without
hesitation, Himmler’s tongue shoved a false tooth with a deadly poison packed in it and
instantly the forthcoming Nuremberg Trials had one less convicted war criminal to hang.
