TV producer Norman Lear, 93, best known for iconic American sitcoms All in the Family and The Jeffersons, talks about his service as an air force pilot during World War Two.
I’m sure there are people who have no idea about your record during World War Two that you were you flew how many bombing missions over Europe?
I flew there was a sortie basis and a mission basis I flew 52 missions because there were some missions we got credit for two because they were so long and I dropped bombs, we dropped bombs 33 times.
And your family did not want you in the war.
No, my mother begged me. We, you know, if you were in college you didn’t have to go in so long as you remained in college but it was that time of life in America we were so in love with the country we, speaking for myself, I had to be there.
