Wreckage of a Junker Ju 88 found in a Russian Wood

A wreckage of a World War II aircraft from the German Luftwaffe has been discovered in a Russian wood. Volksbund announced the discovery on November 14, 2019.

Although little information has been released by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., they did confirm the wreckage is of a Junker Ju-88, a twin-engined multirole combat aircraft. It saw use during the war as a bomber in various uses, combat and night fighter and as a reconnaissance aircraft. The Junker Ju 88 saw its first flight in 1936 and would finally retire in 1951.

During the recovery of the wreckage various equipment was found and also remains and a dog tag (‘Erkennungsmarke’) of a German pilot were found. Based on the factory number of the aircraft, names of the crew can also be identified, bringing closure to the family of the missing airmen.

No more information was released by the Volksbund at this moment. Should anyone be able to provide us more information, all help is welcome.

  1. Those “pistons” are actually connecting rods, which connect pistons with a crankshaft and 2 cm ammo is in general called 20 mm one.
